The Meeting Place

gatherplace 1On November 1, 2008, the 14th Willowdale Scout Group celebrated Scouting’s 100 years by completing construction of an outdoor seating area on the south lawn of Newtonbrook United Church. “The Meeting Place” is a fitting name as Newtonbrook United Church has been the troop’s meeting place for many years. gatherplace 2Four benches surround a brick patio area. Nine cedar planks form each bench, representing the camping traditions of the group; the four main sections of Scouting and the values that each section of Scouting builds on. The initial 8’ x 8’ square that forms the Meeting Place contains 288 bricks. Friends and supporters purchased individual patio bricks for $5.00 each to help pay for the cost for the seating area. Over 90 bricks were signed before being laid in place. Beavers to Venturers helped construct and participated in the project. Whether holding a hammer, sticking to a timetable or laying a brick with their signatures, all of our youth are very proud of their “Meeting Place.
